Getting to Know You

Source
I can hear Miss Anna from The King and I singing in my head...

Getting to know you, getting to know all about you. Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me...

That's how it is with our hair, isn't it? When I stopped using heat on my hair, I had no idea who this fuzzy mess of curls was on my head. What did she like? What did she need? How did she like to be treated? It's almost like you start dating someone, isn't it?? There's the courtship, then the romance, and then hopefully you get married (I am so blessed to have my hubby!).

Well, the process has been similar with getting to know my hair, as I am sure it has been for you as well. But I never lose sight of that fact - it's a process. That takes all the pressure off me and releases me from lofty expectations I may set up for myself. Each time I try out a new styling technique, treatment or product, I go in knowing that not everyone's hair reacts the same to everything, so my results may not turn out as I hope. It's no big deal. If you try and fail, then you simply adjust and try again. I treat everything as a learning experience.

Don't get me wrong. I am not willy-nilly with my hair. My goal is to keep growing my hair, so everything I do to it is carefully calculated. I am not a product junkie (if you are, do you; I mean no disrespect - everyone is different :)). I don't jump onto product bandwagons for two reasons: 1) I am a business owner, so I am not a spokesperson for any company or product line besides my own. Yes, if my line doesn't carry a certain type of product, then I will occasionally try other products. But I am not into trying the next "hot product" just because it sounds good. 2) I read ingredient lists, and if I don't like what I see, then I won't buy it.

So are you singing "getting to know you" to your hair? Whether you're newly natural or have been in the game for a while, I'd love to hear how your journey is going! :)
